Qiang conquers

Our first match of the day featured world number 84 Wang Qiang from China against 16-year old British qualifier Ellie Tsimbilakis.

Wang only started to play on grass last year, and even though this was her first match on grass this year, she went on to win comfortably in both sets, ending the match at a score of 6-2, 6-2.

“It was challenging, yes, given the fact that I´ve played so little on grass. The atmosphere was great though. I am very happy to have won, of course, said Wang Qiang after the match.

She even praised the weather gods for good playing conditions, although due to adverse weather conditions, the match was moved forward an hour on this first day of the 15th edition of Liverpool Hope University International Tennis Tournament.

Wang is coached by Australian tennis legend Peter McNamara, who will be playing a doubles match later on today, alongside Jean-Michael Gambill from USA, against Liverpool Skupski-brothers, Ken and Neal.
