Legends Line-up announced for LHU International Tennis Tournament 2013

Line up of star players announced for Liverpool Hope University International Tennis Tournament

Liverpool Hope University International Tennis Tournament has announced the official player line up for this year’s competition.

Anders Borg, Director of the tournament revealed the headline players in a press conference at the Hilton Hotel in Liverpool One today.

Tennis stars at this year’s tournament will include: Virginia Wade, the only British woman in history to have won titles at all four Grand Slam tournaments, Fabrice Santoro who has appeared in Grand Slam singles competition in four different decades and West Lancashire’s own Barry Cowan.

The tennis tournament takes place in Calderstones Park, Liverpool from 20 – 23 June. Other players confirmed earlier today included former top ten Younes Alanoui, Wimbledon doubles champion, Anders Jarryd as well as Peter Mcnamara.

Leading up to the biggest tennis exhibition in Europe, at South Liverpool’s Calderstones Park, The three week Festival of Tennis kicks off on 28 May to encourage wider participation in the sport.

Anders Borg, Director of the Liverpool International Tennis Tournament, said: “The festival of tennis will allow youngsters across the city to get involved in tennis and engage with the game for life.

“Over 2000 local school children have signed up to attend the kids only day on 19 June and some of these children have never seen a live tennis match before. They will get the chance to see some legends in action and meet the stars of the tournament, inspiring them to pursue their sporting dreams.

“We are really looking forward to welcoming legends of the game to Liverpool and to watching some great live action. We’re shaping up for an amazing line up at this summer’s tournament, and still have lots more ATP and WTA players to be confirmed in May.”

Anders Borg adds, “The Liverpool Hope University International Tennis Tournament, now in its twelfth year, is one of the North West’s most popular annual sporting events.”

Virginia Wade will be back for yet another year at the event:“I am really looking forward to coming back to Liverpool. Last year’s tournament was a great event – both on and off court. It is always wonderful to visit Liverpool, such a beautiful and exciting city.”

The Liverpool Hope University International Tennis Tournament 2013 will provide a unique opportunity to watch ATP and WTP players warming up for Wimbledon The main sponsors of the tournament this year include Liverpool Hope University and Halewood International.

The Liverpool Hope University International Tennis Tournament has also received financial support from the Lawn Tennis Association (LTA) and Tennis Foundation to help fund the community activity around the tournament and promote ongoing opportunities for children and adults to take up the sport in Liverpool.
