Day 1 Summary

Liverpool Hope University DAY 1

Following a brief rain disruption, the Liverpool Hope International kicked off with a thrilling encounter between local qualifier Simon Roberts and world number 76 Guido Pella from Argentina. Following two closely fought sets, the Argentinian battled to win a third set champions tiebreak 12-10.

Centre Court was then treated to another quality mens singles match between world number 49 Pablo Andujar from Spain and world number 103 Martin Alund from Argentina. Andujar won the first set 6-3 before losing a second set tiebreak 7-5. The match was once again decided by a champions tiebreak with the Argentinian coming through 10-5.

Meanwhile on the outside courts world number 85 Alexandra Cadantu from Romania beat local qualifier Natalie Wall 6-0 6-0. Natalie put up a fantastic fight and was unlucky not to get more from the match.

The penultimate match of the day was contested by world number 109 Coco Vandeweghe and Anett Knotaveit the junior number 33. Vandeweghe came through 6-2 6-2.

The final match of the day was scheduled as a legends double exhibition. Unfortunately, due to an airline losing Anders Jaryyd’s luggage, Jaryyd was unable to play and instead a singles match was contested between Younes El Aynaoui of Morroco and Barry Cowan of Great Britain. Aynaoui won 7-6 (7-2).
