The Williams BMW International Tennis Tournament got off to an incredible start on Thursday with four fiercely contended single matches.
Local qualifier Adam Jones kicked off the tournament against Alessandro Giannessi of Italy with Giannessi winning 6-2, 6-2.
The next match on centre court saw former world number 2 Vera Zvonareva begin her comeback following a period of time away from the tour. Zvonareva was up against our ladies’ qualifier Ellie Tsimbilakis coming through with a 6-2, 6-2 win.
The third match saw rising star Elias Ymer of Sweden begin his debut in Liverpool against Robert Kendrick of U.S.A. Kendrick rolled back the years with an impressive 6-3, 6-1 victory.
The first day of the tournament came to an end with an extremely close battle between Corinna Dentoni of Italy and Alexandra Cadantu of Romania.
After two closely fought sets the match could only be decided by a 3rd set championship tie-break. On this occasion it was Dentoni of Italy who managed to complete her fight back winning 3-6, 7-5, 10-1.
